Self improvement is an inherent responsibility in each individual. Upon the application of our free will and the extent of our success, society as a whole is affected. This may be obvious in the case of individual physical health with its obvious benefits to those around us and society in general. It is also important regarding our individual happiness that will also contribute to a collective positive emotional state. When we consider our mind we may see that it is our own business to hold what thoughts we will. However, as it is our thought that is the director of our personal lives, so indirectly if not directly, the collective thought of us all steers the direction of society.
So we need to recognize the important need to cultivate our minds, strengthen them, improve them, maintain our faculties and do all we can to express the finest capacities of the human intellect.
But where do we start our personal programme of mind culture? Although some people are fortunate to have a mentor, a spiritual guide or a hero to whom they refer and upon whom they pattern themselves, the majority of us have to find our own path.
Many existent programmes in business focus upon self improvement and material success. It has become fashionable to adhere to one system or another. However, studying a number of different methods to develop the mind itself can be confusing. It is best to find a simple system that ‘clicks’ or appeals to you, and the simpler the better. You will soon be able to assess its value, not by understanding the theory, but by the results of its practical application.
The same applies to programmes written specifically to improve character or to offer assistance regarding psychological issues to involve emotional and mental training. Some programmes in psychology are based upon intense self analysis. Others consider it important to find strength in a more philosophical over-view or ultimate plan for change rather than examining the past. Yet others look to a spiritual focus for their growth or transformation.
We need an inspirational concept that will not only motivate our efforts to become a better person, but to improve our mind, help us govern our thoughts and to use our creative faculties in a constructive manner.
It will be seen that every path and system will offer attractive promises of self betterment, but the desire to improve ourselves, as well as the action to do so, has to come from within ourselves and must satisfy our personal aspirations. Then we will find the tool that is most appropriate for our own advancement and mental fitness. This will improve our chances to feel free to apply ourselves to the task ahead not only to fulfil our responsibility to ourselves but to be able to contribute improved quality of thought to society.
